As the lead organizer for the WordPress meetup in NYC for more than 15 years, I’ve seen it all when it comes to live demos. Whether it’s writing some code or testing out a plugin, I’ve done it all. Sometimes things go perfectly; other times, not so much. I consider these low-stake demos. If they succeed, it’s fantastic; if they fail, it’s not so terrible.
But live SALES demos are different. They’re not low stakes. You’re there to sell a product, and if your demo falls flat, there’s a good chance your sale might just slip away.
A few months into launching Engine Awesome, I was on a Zoom call with a gentleman from outside the U.S. He worked for a non-profit and was interested in our software for his next project. Unfortunately, as we got talking, it became clear that Engine Awesome wouldn’t be a fit. We were just too new and didn’t have the features he was after. It was a bit of a bummer, but sometimes you just gotta admit you’re not the right tool for the job.
Then things took an interesting turn. He pulled up this enormous spreadsheet where his company was tracking their donations and asked if I could help. Now, this is where Engine Awesome shines – turning large, unmanageable spreadsheets into powerful, easy-to-use applications.
So, feeling a bit like a rock star, I called an audible and suggested we build an app right there on the call. Yep, a live demo with actual stakes.
And man, it went great. In under 15 minutes, I whipped up an application that made tracking donors and donations a breeze, complete with a record of all interactions and history of gifts. He was seriously impressed with the power and speed of Engine Awesome.
